Sleep Medicine
Sleep disorders can be detrimental to all body systems, making diagnosis and treatment vital. Sleep studies are used to help diagnose several serious medical conditions. Although many people do not realize it, there are direct links between sleep and heart disease as well as sleep and diabetes. Patients suffering from those conditions or from narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, snoring, and/or insomnia may benefit from a sleep study.
Patients having a sleep study are attached to monitors that record vital signs and body movements during an overnight stay in the hospital’s Sleep Lab. Data gathered during the study is used to make a diagnosis and begin any prescribed treatment.
Talk to your primary healthcare provider if you may need a sleep study if you experience any symptoms listed below because you might benefit from a sleep study.
- Morning headaches
- Excessive snoring
- Daytime sleepiness
- Insomnia
- Frequent daytime drowsiness
You can also take this sleep questionnaire to help you decide whether or not a sleep study might be necessary.
