The Miles for Miles Cancer Walk sets a record year in 2021

The Miles to Miles Cancer Walk held on October 9, 2021, set a record fundraising year, collecting $9,259.84. This year, the name of our annual cancer walk was changed to Miles to Miles. The name represents the miles we walk to provide proceeds for the many Harrison County cancer patients in need of traveling miles for treatment to fight their disease.

The Harrison County Transportation Fund, established many years ago by the late Betty Manville and the late H.A. Roberson, provides financial assistance for Harrison County residents who have been newly diagnosed with cancer and are traveling to medical appointments. The Harrison County Cancer Transportation Fund is administered by volunteers Carole Barton and Rhonda Deskins, who give their time selflessly.

The Harrison County Community Hospital District and Foundation has sponsored this cancer walk since its inaugural event in 2010. This event has grown into so much more since its beginning. Some individuals walk in honor of their family and friends. Others walk in memory of them. In the past 12 years, this event has raised over $78,000 to support local cancer patients.

In 2000, cancer patients received a $50 check at the time of their diagnosis from the Transportation Fund. With the success of this event and memorial and monetary donations throughout the county, cancer patients now receive $800. As the number of individuals diagnosed with cancer grows, this fund becomes more necessary! Every year, 100% of the proceeds stay in Harrison County.

Thank you all for your constant support over the last 12 years. We look forward to serving Harrison County for many years to come.
